Where to get a Great Sandwich in Bend, Oregon

My hometown, Bend, Oregon, is famous for its sunshine, recreation and great skiing. Its also getting quite a bit of a reputation for fine dining. In fact, there are more high quality restaurants in this town of 80,000 than the national average. Catering to the wealthy people who love to recreate, work and retire here, you can find a wide range of cuisine in this mountain region.

But what about cheap lunch spots? Forget McDonalds or SubWay. You want an authentic sub sandwich to fuel you up for the day - whether you are going to be hiking, skiing, or simply sitting in your office conference room, gazing longingly at the snow.

Hands down, your best bet is New York City Sub Shop. There are two locations in Bend - one right downtown, and another on the East Side, near Costco and other shopping destinations (you can also find the restaurant in Portland, Redmond, the Dalles and Hood River in Oregon and in Jackson, Wyoming).

New York City Subs in the Heart of Central Oregon

At my law firm, monthly conference meetings usually involved ordering take-out. New York City Subs is one of our favorite places for delicious, cheap lunch eats.

Sandwiches are served hot or cold on traditional hogie rolls that are baked daily (I suggest hot!) Offerings include the Manhattan (Genoa Salami, Ham and Provolone), Park Avenue (Pastrami and Provolone), Battery Street (Tuna), Staten Island (Meatball sub), and the Bronx (Turkey). You can also enjoy ham in the Broadway sub sandwich or roast beef in the Wall Street.  Everyone's favorite?  Classic cheesesteak!

Unless you have a huge appetite, I suggest ordering a 1/2 sub - they are extremely filling and larger than you might expect! You definitely get your money's worth at the New York City Subs!

Along with your sub, you get chips and a cookie - perfect for anyone heading out to explore Bend, Oregon for the day!

The History of the Best Sub Sandwich in Bend Oregon

New York City Sub Shops has been making quality sandwiches since 1985! Restaurants were founded with the first shop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Building on the success of the resort town in WY, the owners expanded to Oregon!

Tourists and locals alike love the New York City subs served up by Bruce Tlougan and Andrew Deenik. Small, intimate locations like the two in Bend showcase local art, while serving up favorite flavors each day.

Is it any coincidence that these sub shop owners chose cities with active populations in which to locate their restaurants? Hard to say, but folks here in Bend are always out riding bicycles, hiking, running, or enjoying alpine sports. Same could be said for Jackson Hole.

What better way to fuel up with a filling, hearty sandwich instead of a fatty burger from a local fast food joint?

Even National Geographic recommends New York City Subs in Oregon for a great place to enjoy a quality, healthy sandwich.

Thumbs up, Steph as that is my favorite shop! They have one in Redmond, too and we are always sharing a Wall Street! We've been to the one in Jackson Hole too which is awesome.

Thank you - I thought of it driving down Bond the other day. Thought, boy, now I haven't had one of those subs in a while, but they are my favorite! I'd love to go to the one in Jackson Hole too.

Bruce and Andrew have a great thing going! Now, I have to wonder, if they incorporated the great Philly cheese steak into their menu, would that be a good thing? I think it would, and it would also take the rivalry about who has the greatest sub food, Philly or NYC, to a new level.

As always, wonderful Hub...just wish I were there to enjoy.

What I liked best about this Hub was 1). Affordability, 2). The descriptions of the type of subs offered, made my stomach growl, 3). I love Oregon and I have somewhere I can eat on a budget when I visit. Thank you.

Hi Bill - I could fill pages and pages of great places to eat here in Bend (actually check out AKirchner's hubs too). Too bad I got started on the contest late after Labor Day. Or... I could just keep writing them in weeks ahead. Cheers, Steph
