Nikon Coolpix S6000: A Review

I needed a smaller, more portable camera as an alternative to my Nikon D60 digital SLR camera. I've been traveling for a few freelance writing projects and, of course, my clients want high quality photographs and video featuring their properties and products.

I did a bit of research and then headed to the stores to check out point and shoot digital cameras in the $100-200 range. Good quality was a priority. Saving money - also important!

After 4 stores and half a day shopping, we finally settled on the Nikon Coolpix S6000. Post-holiday deals, and a 1-day coupon that I managed to score, brought the price down from $199 to $129, which seemed like a steal!

I first used my new Nikon Coolpix S6000 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Michigan in early January 2011. I was invited to NAIAS by Ford Motor Company to hear about their new vehicles, cutting edge technology (including the Ford My Touch) and review the green features and company-wide practices undertaken by the company at their facilities worldwide.

I loved the small, sleek profile of the camera, which fit nicely in my pocket. I was already juggling my laptop, charging devices, cell phone and press pass. Having the Nikon Coolpix S6000 on the ready (and not also dangling around my neck) allowed me to shoot lots of photographs and amazing HD video of the event.

I would say that use of a tripod would enhance the quality of my videos, but my photographs turned out nearly as well as those from my Nikon D60 digital SLR (even indoors).

Battery life was an issue a few times because I was shooting so much video, but using the USB cable to connect to my computer, and after downloading the media to my laptop, I was able to get about 50% charge again in less than 1 hour.

The Nikon camera is ready to go, right out of the box. However, if you plan on taking more than about 20 photographs without downloading them off the camera right away, you'll need to get an SD (secure digital) memory card.

To protect your Nikon Coolpix S6000, it is recommended that you get a camera case, too.

The included Li-ion battery is rechargeable, but unless you purchase a separate charging AC Adapter EH-62F, you'll have to draw a charge by connecting your camera via USB port to your computer. Of course, make sure that your computer is plugged in, with adequate battery life of its own.

High digital video capabilities are built in. But, what use is HD video, if camera shake ruins your shot? In fact, using a tripod while shooting still photographs will also improve results. Although vibration reduction technology is included with the device, I'd still recommend you get a tripod. There is a port at the bottom of the camera.

Like other point and shoot cameras, the lens is built in. You cannot change out lenses for macro, telephoto or other uses. However, there is a macro mode on the Nikon Cooplix S6000, and one of the coolest features that I've enjoyed: a focus-area selection that gives "face priority," and also includes a 9-area automatic selection and 99 focus areas with manual mode.

You can also adjust your aperture range in two steps (f/3.7 and f/7.4), and shutter speed, with the ability to choose between ISO of 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200.  Of course, there is an "auto" mode, too.

Even if you've never taken a single photograph in your life, the Nikon Coolpix S6000 can help you take high quality photographs. Charge up the battery, insert an SD card (recommended) and turn on the camera on the top of the device.

You can set the clock, time zone, date and pick your language among the 23 offered. The monitor on the back will tell you how much remaining battery life you have. Make sure you have a full charge before heading out. As an aside, you'll get about 210 still photographs on a single charge. When I was in Detroit, I depleted the battery more quickly by shooting multiple videos. The operating manual states that you can fully recharge the battery in 4 hours using the Charging AC Adapter EH-68P (not included).

The Nikon Coolpix S6000 is not waterproof, so take care when shooting outside in the rain. The camera is recommended for use at a temperature range of 32-104 degrees F (0-40 degrees C).

For novices, or those that are too busy to fiddle with all the settings on the camera, leave it on "Auto" mode. The camera will automatically focus when you depress the shutter halfway. Flash will fire inside and in low-light conditions outdoors. You can immediately review and, if you wish delete, photographs using the monitor on the back.

While shooting photographs in a museum last week, I was upset by the flash glare off the glass containers.  Fortunately, I just switched on the mode and noticed that one of many options included a "museum mode."  I got a great shot (see below).

With a camera like the Nikon Coolpix S6000, you are supposed to have fun!  The camera is light and portable enough, you can take it just about anywhere.  Its inexpensive enough that you don't have to be overly worried about your investment in the camera and equipment.  In fact, I think it would be a great gift idea for preteens or teenagers that have developed some responsibility.

At the same time, my little Nikon point and shoot takes impressive photographs and videos.  Its perfect for family get-togethers, reunions, and even some sporting events.  I own a Nikon D60 SLR, as well, which I take with me to gymnastics meets so that I can use my telephoto lens and quick shutter release.  But when you need to pack light and want both still photograph and video capabilities in a small camera that can fit right in your purse or briefcase, I suggest considering the Nikon Coolpix S6000.
