TLC's What Not to Wear Show
81
Would you be surprised if your best friend accused you on national television of being stuck in the 1980s? Have you considered picking your split ends an appropriate way to trim your hair? Do you look over your shoulder wondering if you're being secretly videotaped when you dash to the grocery store in pajama bottoms and an oversized sweatshirt. If you answered yes to any of these questions, then perhaps you're familiar with the fun reality show "What Not to Wear," which airs on The Learning Channel (TLC) in America.
What Not to Wear is hosted by the hilarious personalities, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, and is based on a British television series of the same name. Together Stacy and Clinton pick apart the nominated contestant's wardrobe, throw everything in a trash can, parade the victim (er, lucky winner) in front of a 3-way dressing mirror, and then send them off with $5,000 on a Visa Card to shop for better clothes in New York City. All in all, its a pretty good exchange. A few minutes of embarrassment for a whole new wardrobe and a trip to Manhattan! Where do I sign up?
To make things even better, the What Not to Wear contestant gets more than just a new wardrobe. A hairstyle by Nick Arrojo and makeup tips from Carmindy are also included. All this, and the low-down from Stacy and Clinton as to what to shop for that will specifically fit your age, style and body shape.
Its a win-win-win situation. Except for those poor souls that aren't quite ready to give up their waist-high jeans, too tight tops, or shapeless coats. Cringe along with me here. They certainly know What Not to Wear! That's when the drama of reality television comes in...

With very few exceptions, you can't sign yourself up for this dream week of shopping in New York. The trick of the show is that the contestant has been nominated by relatives or colleagues. What Not To Wear follows the unsuspecting person around for two weeks shooting secret footage of the style disaster that is about to be corrected!
Eventually, Stacy and Clinton sneak up on the poor soul with cameras close behind, shouting out that they've been selected for What Not To Wear, (which of course means, "you have terrible taste, my dear, and we're going to fix it!")
Stacy and Clinton will make lots of sarcastic jokes, heaping harsh criticism on the un-stylish person selected for improvement. However, they also give specific direction as to what clothes, shoes and accessories will, and will not work, and why, from top to bottom. Some of my favorite advice has to do with selecting jeans that make you look less heavy and definitely more stylish!
Cheat-sheet polaroid photos of mannequins are provided to allow the contestant references of the "rules" for the new outfits for which they will be shopping. The contestant is given a quick low-down of the basics of What Not to Wear.
Then, the fun begins (or maybe not, as sometimes the contestant really, really hates to shop). Stacy and Clinton watch videotaped footage of the person trying on clothes and again make remarks about their progress, or lack thereof, towards better style.
On the second day of shopping, the hosts reveal themselves and usually help select appropriate clothes, shoes and even undergarments to improve the overall look of the participant.
What a Cute Top - Can I Borrow it?
Once the $5,000 is spent, the exhausted What Not to Wear contestant gets to go in for some makeover work. First stop is the hair salon with Nick Arrojo. Nick works magic with hair, from color to cut, invariably leaving the participant looking several years younger and fresher. He doesn't share the caustic, critical style of Stacy and Clinton, but Nick does offer tips on better haircare.
As with the shopping, though, some people are reluctant to cut long hair or go for a drastic change. Those episodes are not nearly as much fun to watch as others!
After hair, comes makeup. Many times, the contestant is an extremist - either no makeup at all, or way too much. Carmindy is masterful at helping people shape their brows and to gently coax them into trying a new way of wearing makeup.
After the makeover is complete, the participant gets to show off! First, they model three outfits for Stacy and Clinton - the reveal is always a climax of the show. Stacy has been seen to cry at some dramatic transformations! Then, the contestant packs their bags and heads home to show off their new look to family and friends and a big celebration.
The before and after shots on What Not to Wear are usually stunning and inspiring! Not only is it entertaining television, but you can usually pick up a few style tips for yourself just by watching. All in all, its one of my favorite shows.
The combination of humor, vicarious shopping, and the tranformative quality of just paying a bit more attention to small details makes What Not to Wear a show to watch.

This is one of my favorite shows too! I will tape a whole day of them when they run a marathon and watch them all week. I have taken lots of tips from the show and put them into my own wardrobe....have had to throw quite a few things out too.
I love it too and have learned a ton from Stacey and Clinton. Great hub:)
I thought Stacy was so annoying at first, but she's grown on me. I find the show pretty entertaining. Great hub!
Just was wondering if you could help me with a 50th Anniversary for my folks, and I'm one of 20 children.. And was wondering if you could get me a small make over, and an outfit for the party. Party is August 16th 2008. There are 6 girls and 14 boys maybe you would help us girls out... Just thought you might be able to do something, and my daughters and I love your show..Keep up the good work your great.
OH Man! I was going to write this hub!!! Glad I looked around and saw that you'd done this (great) one before I was even a hubber. BUT, if someone had to have already written about "WNTW" glad it was you! Where DO you find the time to write soooo much?
I watched what not to wear for the first time about 8 months ago, with my 8 year old granddaughter. i
i would really want my mom to be on this show so please do whatever you can to get her on the next what not to wear
i dont like this show and all ,it is to long time wise i always pass the cannel if that show is on, it don't have to go on for 60 minute,
my mom is a total fasion icon! that is if you want to look your 85. my mom is a 50 year old that dresses like she is 85. she needs a total mkaeover. she dresses in the frumyest clothes i have ever seen and she is imbarrasing to introduce to my friends. she finds little time for herself and that needs to change! she has a dress that she still wears today from when my sister was 1 and she is now 25. tell me that there isnt somthing wrong with that? my mom has jeans that are from the 70s that she still wears. she also has these flip flops that are from the dollar store that are good for the beach...but she wears them everywhere! and half the clothes in her closet she doesnt even fit into. so please TLC and stacy and clinton please help my mom!
When contributors remark that something is not what he or she likes, Stacy and Clinton should forcefully remind her or him yhat things she or he likes are what got him or her on the program: She or He is now in the process of lbecoming "a better you". This might save a little time for you. nnonetheless It IS a very good program. Peace Out. km.
i LOVE STACY & CLINTON!i SAW HIM YESTERDAY AT mACYS IN CHARLOTTE NC HE IS BETTER LOOKING IN PERSON.AND i GOT UP CLOSE TO ASK A QUESTION.i WAS REALLY GLAD i GOT TO GO SEE HIM
NANCY
love the show!!!!! r u guys goming to Raleigh NC anytime soon?
Good hub, Steph. I don't watch this show, but have an in-law who does. The show's credibility dropped with me when this relative sent out family picture (cats included) Christmas cards. Very nice, always liked those. Then another in-law noticed that in this picture, two of her children, the chubby ones, were dressed in vertically striped shirts. ..."So they are," I agreed.
I'm certainly no fashion expert (the Queer Eye dudes would have a field-day with me, I can just hear it now; "Honey, buy some long pants!") but even I know the simple vertical and horizontal rules: One makes you slimmer, the other makes you look wider.
Clearly, "What Not to Wear" doesn't bother with teaching its viewers such simple things as ...The Basics.
Dear Stacey and Clinton, I'm a mother of five and I have no style sense Ive recently ahd a women's operation and I'm am trying to start a new section of my life. AS I recover I realize that it's time to improve my outer appearance to look for work,go out be an exmple to my four daughters and my son. I need help there is no where to start. "Would you be surprised if your best friend accused you on national television of being stuck in the 1980s"
She would be my ex-friend in no time flat!
I don't know about the US version, but the two women who do the UK version are evil cows.
I've not seen the American one, but I don't think they pay for much on ours, they just humiliate you, and cast aspersions on not only your clothes, but body / life / husband / job / anything!
Dear Stacy and Clintion, first of all I just want to say I love your show. And I would like to niminate my self for the show because my mom think wear my close to big and I have to many polo shrits. I'm a single mother of one. I Work part time and I'm also a student. I'm plnning on getting married in june, so Stacy can you please come to El Dorado ark. and help me.
wow gay
I love this show and watch it all the time. I don't understand, however, why Nick makes everyones hair look the same. Women with long hair would look great if he would just shape, color and condition it. His reason is always that it's doing nothing for their face. Please ask him to stop cutting everyones hair off. :(
omg I love that "kelly" video you have on this hub LOL, I heard another song of his called 'shoes' aahahahaha I love it. The hub was awesome, very entertaining. Thanks!
Enjoyable read - very nice write up - plus my mom loves this show. The videos were a great selection to start my day off right.
I just saw the "Katie M" rerun of WNTW last night. The second mannequin they showed her had these amazing dressy, black flats (that I think are from Sacco - after trying to find them online). I was wondering where I can buy them. They aren't available on Sacco's website. Any ideas???

i love what not to wear and stacy and clition cool
i love youre show ps. cilntion is hot
I love this show and watch it on cable every morning and on weekends. Although I know Stacy and Clinton's job is to harrass and make jokes about people's style, I am very disappointed with Stacy's language becoming looser and looser all the time. Makes one wonder if she is the lady she portrays with her potty mouth.
I still like this show, although 98% of the rest of TV should be composted. Seems a lot of people enjoy their makeovers. Some people cry because they think that they must leave themselves behind when they change their look. Always glad when they heal from that.
Clinton & Stacy, I am 72 yrs old now, but feel much different. How am I to be dressing at this age of my life? I feel you both can help me to know!I watch your show faithfully, but there are never any older women on, we to need to know also .If you have any advice to offer on your show it would be wonderful. Thanks , Charlene p.s.I personaly would love to be an example on the show but of course that won"t happen. Maybe someone will vote an older lady on. Luv you both.
Hi Stacy and Clinton, I love love love your show. I wish you could start another show for women over 45. We love to look great to. We can be hot looking (smile) even at 57years old with a little help from you guys. Please keep your show going forever. It is great. Love you both.
Clinton and Stacey will you ever do a makeover show that involves a man? My husband used to be such a good dresser now I am lucky if he wears shorts without holes. I would love to see a male make over then maybe he could get some ideas. Love you guys

Hey, my name is Amber. I'm the daughter of Heather Roberts. My step father is in jail, and this whole time no one has really stuck together as a family, but my mom has still put everyone else's needs before her own, she is really being very great and supportive through all this. Well anyways not too long ago my step father wrote me and said for me to get her on a show, that she admires. Everyday your show is on she watches it, she's always saying how she would love to be on your show. If you could figure out a way to get her on there, for being the great mother, and wife that she is, I will greatly appreciate it, thank you..
-Amber Roberts.
If you have any suggestions or hopefully enter my mom in your show, contact me at amber.roberts67@yahoo.com, to be sure about real websites, to get my number to really contact me, and we talk about it please email me first.

i love love loveeeeeeee this show:)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would like to know why they took off What Not to Wear on the USA channel in Baltimore, Maryland at 6:00 P.M. They keep putting that Say Yes to the Dress which is a stupid show. We need What Not to Wear back on
I stopped watching it in the NY area....absolutely became ridicilous with all the repeat's. One can see from the fashion that a lot of the shows are 2 - 3 years old and have been shown....over and over and over and over .
Are you dumbing US down ?
I get TLC from Springfield,MO, and this fall have been unable to find "What Not to WEar", one of my very favorite shows. What is the schedule...when can we see it.
When does the new season begin? Help! I know not 'what to wear'!
I REALLY ENJOY THE SHOW. I LIKE THE ADVICE STACEY AND CLINTON GIVE THE GUEST ON THE SHOW. TRY TO APPLY THE RULES THAT FIT MY BODY SHAPE. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO ASK CARMINDY IF SHE COULD GIVE ME ADVICE ON HOW TO MAKE MY EYE COLOR STAND OUT MORE. ITS A LITTLE UNUSAL. I HAVE ONE EYE THAT IS HALF GREEN AND HALF BROWN. THE OTHER WILL BE GREEN OR A SHADE OF BLUE ACCORDING TO WHAT COLOR OF SHIRT I HAVE ON. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU CAN EMAIL ME BACK AT sweetpeamissy_64@yahoo.com. HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON.

I love the show What Not To Wear, but would you pleassssse do makeovers own ladies over 50. We love looking sexy too. I love watching Stacy and Clinton together they are a great pair.
when does the new what not to wear start??
I love the show and I agree to see womens over 50.
I don't know how anyone could like this show, or why anyone would want to be subjected to it much less ON it. Why would you sign up to be shamed and criticized on national public television? Some "dream week" that is! They're nothing but a couple of rude rich snobs who take joy in putting real working people down. Anyone who is in the middle class or lower is hardly worth more than the scum of the earth to them. They can't expect everyone around them to spend 100 bucks on every pair of jeans or a skirt and another 80 for the top.
wow do u really watch what not to wear well i don't really its never on
Hey sequoia, you are some what right. The show really seems to be about people who literally look down on others who refuse to put too much emphasis externally. They (the others) prefer to let people "read the book but not its cover". There is nothing wrong with not showing off anything below the knees or breast cleavage. Sometimes Stacey and Clinton go to far. Women don't need to dress sexy to look good. They need to dress descently and appropriately according to the setting. Yes, you should feel good with what you wear. So change if necessary.

Great hub! I LOVE What Not to Wear, and actually prefer the Tuesday night slot to the Friday night time that they had before. I only wish someone would vote for me, just so I could get to spend two days with Stacy and Clinton!!
I love your show, but why don't you ever do older women? I am a 64 yr old baby boomer and it is so hard to find clothes for this awkward age. Either it is for the 20 and 30 age groups or for the 80's. I would like to look fashionable, but am perplexed as to what is appropriate for my age. We need help too!! Thanks lmorgan@nwcable.net
I'm a Senior citizen & so many of my friends are in the same income and age group.
We watch What Not To Wear and we would love to see an overwieght, healthy, active senior on a limited budget(almost nil for clothing) on your show.
There are a lot of us out there and this is one senior Canadain who watches and would be thrilled to see our group represented.
I think the old gals would love to be pampered and showed how to look their very best.
Love your show.
Shirley

I work with a Doctor who wears a fanny pack. Everything she wears appear to be too small. She look like she wears old hiking clothes. She is soooo nice to everyone. Does anyone know how to nominate her to what not to wear?
Stacy and Clinton,
I would like to nominate my daughter-in-law and granddaughter, both are single parents Cyndi my daughter in law has rasied our grandaughter Celsy sence our son died when Celsy was 4, Clesy now is a single parent of 2, a 9 year old daughter,Ckyler and a son Zander 5 mo. old, they have not had a great like they have never had money for clothes, this would be so wonderful to see them both get to immprove there appearance, they are very special to me Celsy has had a lot of trouble growing up maybe this will help her get a job and feel better about herself, Cindy has been a single Mom since she was 29, she has devoted her life to Celsy and Ckyler and Zander. Please let me know if we stand a chance of getting them on your show
i think the show is great and my mom neeeeeeeeds to be on it.
Like i said my mom needs to be on this show because she only wears a scrub shirt and a pair of diva pants every day so my mom neeeeeeeeds to be on this show.
I really love this show and end up throwing out all my clothes after watching. I always tell my kids and I pray we could have a "What Not To Wear" here in Canada. I really really need it. I would die to have a chance to be on a show like this. I'm not the weight I want to be at the moment but love that Stacey and Clinton agree to dress the body you have now.. I just don't know how. I was always under weight or in excellent shape until my separation. Then recently diagnosed with breast. I have travelled a long road to fight this nasty disease. Had 5mths of chemo while still working. Had surgery removing both breasts and reconstructing them with my abs. Now receiving 25 doses of radiation. Will be returning back to work in a mth and would love to be able to get a wardrobe that says "sexy, survivor, beautiful" woman. Anyway, I just want to say I love the show and so wish we could have it here in Canada, Winnipeg Manitoba....Hugs Bonnie
Help! I would love to sign up but I don't know how!!! I am a 22 year old stay at home mom of 2 babies (2 and 10 months). I still wear my high school clothes or consigned clothes my mom has bought for me. It's really pityful. I want to dress my age, but I don't really know what is mommy appropriate. I want to look and feel attractive, but respectable and beautiful--not trashy. I don't want anymore dirty looks from everyone that thinks i'm a teenager with to kids already! Please Help!!! You don't even have to send me to NY. I live in San Antonio, I'm sure there are places here that you could direct me towards! ;)
--Sarah.baumgard@yahoo.com
Thank you and God bless!!!
Stacy and Clinton,
I don't know if you can do this, but i would like to nominate myself for your show. I love watching it and try to take tips from some of the shows but it is hard. I am a 27 year old stay at home mom. I have 3 children, 9(stepson), almost 4 and almost 2. After my first biological child was born I lost a lot of weight. I was about a 0-2. I was never small as a young adult so i really enjoyed shopping well after my last child i gained way more weight during my pregnancy and now at almost 2 years I can't figure out the fit of clothes that i need. All my pants give me muffin top and my shirts don't fit me right b/c i'm still trying to fit into things i could before my last baby. It is really depressing b/c i still want to be able to dress well and be a mom at the same time. I would love it if you would consider me a candidate for you show!!!
i need help it takes me forever to get dressed then i end up just putting on the samething or what i call safe i fell i have good thing just dont know how to put them together maybe something for a show
How do you get someone on the show? I don't want to be mean but she really needs it!
Hi my name is beth. I watch your show every day and not only do I love the show I feel that I need your help. When I lost her I juat stopped caring about me and I want to be happy again but I dont think I will ever fully b happy until I can start feeling good about myself. I have a sevev yr old son now and I want him to have a confident mom. I cry everyday and need some fashion help so I can get out of theaeropostale sweats. Please fall inlove with my story and help me. I need things to feel good about. And I want to b an inspiration to other young ladies who hit trials in life that are almost unbareable. Thank u for listening. Beth simpson knoxville, tn.

We are from South Africa , and absolutely LOVE your show !! So....if ever you come to South Africa i have a BIG problem that you can help with !
Would you please show the proper clothes for women over the age of 60 - 65. Most stores have very young styles or else frompy still for heavy people, Cam you suggest something for casual wear. I have to wear a uniform (levi and pullover shirts. I just need some basic suggestion. Does your new book cover this age group.
Thank you for any suggestions.
How about offering tips to women who have gone through the menopause their body has change inside as well as outside. What use to look good does not make it any more. Example when you are use to having the "girls in a B cup" and that changes and is more changeling to change your style. Could the show offer more tips to women that are going through this the women are frustrated and most likely will give up when in the past they use to have a handle on what to wear that looks good. Is the show up to this challenged or will they continue to concentrate on the youth? Look at your comments I see other people feel like the show has avoided this age group.

I like this show a lot, although I have not seen it in several weeks. I like the way they can provide a makeover without surgery or drastic weight loss. It's great! Thanks for writing about this.
