Looking for gift ideas for 13-year old boys?

You are in the right place! Not only do I have a 13-year old son, but we also live close to several of my nephews that are heading into the teenage years (12 and 14, respectively).

If the 13-year old boy in your life is anything like my son, you probably won't get a helpful response to questions about what they want for their birthday or the holidays. A shrug and grunt is all I got. So, I had to do some sleuthing to compile a list of gift ideas for 13-year old boys. My 10-year old son was quite helpful, too!

Whether you are shopping for a birthday present or a gift for the holidays, bookmark this hub for reference. I've included a range of ideas: gaming, sports, entertainment, traditional gifts and more for a 13-year old boy.

Gaming Gift Ideas for 13-Year Old Boys

My 13-year old shares an X-Box 360 system with his siblings, and also has a Nintendo DSI. Now that he has a cell phone, he seems to be outgrowing the DSI. The X-Box, however, is still fun to play when he has friends over.

Each year, the holiday season brings many new games for all gaming systems on the market: Nintendo DS consoles (handheld game system), X-Box 360, Wii and Sony PS3. There are also games to play on the computer and applications that can be downloaded to cell phones. As I noted in a related hub:

Experts say that new game consoles will not be offered until 2013. So, your best bet right now is to consider adding to individual game collections.

With a 13-year old boy, you are now moving into more mature video games. And, the kids themselves want to play "cool" games. A rating system categorizes games as "E" for everyone, "T" for teens, and "M" for mature. Just because you have a teenager doesn't mean that all "T" rated games are appropriate. Violence, sexual themes and language may be coarser than that found in "E" rated games. Think of it as similar to a PG-13 rated movie. If in doubt, ask a salesperson or read online reviews.

That said, I can say that one of my 13-year old son's favorite games is "Halo," which is rated "M."

Popular gaming gift ideas for 13-year old boys include:

  • Current versions of NCAA, NFL, NBA and MLB sports games
  • Movie-themed games (Harry Potter, Batman, etc.)
  • Rock band games
  • Halo
  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater
  • World of Warcraft
  • The Sims
  • Final Fantasy
  • Need for Speed
  • StarCraft Battle Chest

in 2011-2012, the hot games include:

  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Batman Arkam City
  • Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare 3
  • Assassins Creed

Note that many of these games are rated M for mature, due to violence/war

Sports Gift Ideas for 13-Year Old Boys

There is a subtle difference between my 10-year old son and my 13-year old when it comes to sports.

Apparently, once you become a teenager, its not as cool to wear caps, jerseys, sweatshirts, etc. of your favorite team. And definitely take down the Red Sox drapes and put away the Yankees bedspread.

Sports gift ideas for 13-year old boys are focused on.... you guessed it.... your teenager!

Here's a list of items that will probably be appreciated, even if they don't show it:

  • Sports equipment (balls, bats, mitts, helmets, hoops, goals, etc.)
  • Sports memorabilia (trading cards, signed balls and the like)
  • Brand-name T-shirts - my son likes Nike and Adidas
  • Tickets to a sporting event
  • Tuition for sports camps or similar programs

Tech Gift Ideas for Teenage Boys

By the teenage years, its all about tech gifts. I finally got my 13-year old a cell phone for his birthday this year (he has a Samsung Intensity II - he'll have to wait to buy his own iPhone one day....)

Depending on your budget, there are many tech gadgets you could consider when shopping for gifts for 13-year old boys. Keep in mind that not all boys will take good care of these items that can easily become lost or broken. Another tip is to consider getting previous models of items (you can usually purchase new versions) and/or those with less memory (8GB instead of 16GB).

  • iPod Nano
  • iPod Touch
  • Other mP3 players and accessories
  • Laptop computer - many inexpensive notebook versions available
  • Cell phone - you don't have to go with the new iPhone4! There are basic models that still allow for easy texting available for less than $50 with generous rebates (hint: go for an unlimited texting plan to avoid a shockingly high cell phone bill)

Entertainment Gift Ideas for 13-Year Old Boys

Let's say you want to save money on a gift for a 13-year old boy. How is that even possible?

Believe it or not, but some young teenagers still enjoy reading books and watching movies. There are a number of popular series available, depending on interests (sorcery, magic, history, fantasy, vampires, etc.) Just think - you'll save money and probably a few of your 13-year old's brain cells when you get them a book for a present!

Recommended book series - so they don't stop at just one:

  • Harry Potter series (they might not admit it, but they still love it)
  • The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins
  • Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colter
  • Stormbreaker series by Anthony Horowitz
  • The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
  • Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan
  • The Vadelah Chronicles series by Julie Rollins
  • The Demon's Lexicon Trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan
  • The Heir Chronicles by Cinda Williams Chima

Other great books, classics they should enjoy:

  • Watership Down by Richard Adams
  • I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
  • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Traditional Gift Ideas for 13-Year Old Boys

When I was growing up, video games were fairly new on the scene and no one had cell phones (at least not the kids).  These days, 13-year old boys' tastes have matured, while the price of gifts has increased.  You will be hard pressed to find a typical teenager who will appreciate a board game for a present.

Traditional gift ideas for 13-year old boys are often focused on "cool."  They probably won't admit it if they still like to experiment with Spy Ware or build Legos, so take those off the list.

Instead, consider:

  • Skateboards and accessories
  • Roller blades
  • Bicycles
  • Scooters
  • Other sports equipment - snowboarding, wakeboarding, skiing, sledding, etc.
  • Pool table, balls and cue
  • Table tennis set
  • Foosball table

Don't forget accessories: helmets, gloves, boots, bindings, batteries and any other item necessary for your 13-year old boy to enjoy these gifts!

When in Doubt, Go with a Gift Card!

Let's face it - teenagers are difficult to communicate with!  Trying to please a13-year old boy with a gift may be more difficult than getting him to clean his room.

Fortunately, you don't have to worry about a gift card being a cop-out for a present.  Teens will appreciate the freedom of shopping for their own gift, on their own (mostly) terms.  Even better - after the holidays, most retailers slash prices on their products... right when your 13-year old will go shopping.

Gift cards are available in a range of values (usually $25-100) from a number of specific retailers.  The boys in my family enjoy getting gift cards from Target, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, Game Stop, REI, and other sporting goods stores.  For music on the go, iTunes cards are perfect for any mP3 player.  If you want to give your 13-year old even more flexibility in shopping with a gift card, pick up one of the Visa or MasterCard options.  They work just like cash!

What Gifts Sound Best for a 13-Year Old Boy?

  • Gift cards! They are too hard to shop for at this age
  • A new cell phone or mP3 player - something tech-related
  • Sports gear
  • A new game for his gaming system
  • Other - please share in the comments

You are on to a great topic here. The Hub I did on 4 year old girl gifts may be my best producing hub.

When I was 13, I would have loved these, especially the video games, but not the books so much. I was pretty good at using the library by then and loved that I could read the books and then return them and get more.

stephhicks68 Hub Author 19 months ago

Thanks Paul - I have a birthday party for twins hub that also gets a lot of traffic! :)

I hear you on the books. We have a few sets of popular series, like Harry Potter, but often head to the library to check out popular books.

Trying to find something my grandson will like is always a trying experience. I ordered Halo Reach for him and found out his Mom already gave the same game to him for his birthday. Luckily Walmart on-line items can be returned at any Walmart for a credit or refund. He lives for video games I think. Appreciated all of your ideas. A gift card may have to be the final option. Can't get any ideas from him. ugh!

Great ideas, thanks so much. Yes, I have noticed a subtle difference in what different genders as well as ages wants for gift...if it were generic, it would be so easy to buy a gift but then you would also want something that the recipient will enjoy...not something that will be just put on the side for display, lol. Teens these days are techie...so one has to be very updated too.

foulch 18 months ago

I am a Teen Kid and while some of these were the kinds of things I would get not all of them are. I agree with books, I find most guys like me like Sci Fi, some fantasy, and some mystery, also games are good and there are some realy cheap PC games out there. Electronics also a good idea (just letting you know your teen kid probably knows more about them then you do keep this in mind.) I like the idea of that movie pass, I would definetly use that, also Movies on DVD are good too. I personaly am actualy the kind of person who worries a ton about money, I don't know why. It is not the kind of thing kids my age worry about but, I do. My b-day is coming up and I don't know what I want. These were some good suggestion

when i was little my mom would have us make out lists of

what we wanted for christmas and our birthdays.

I did that with my daughter and now with my 2 grandsons

ages 13 and 15. Then I look everything up online (since

most of it I never heard of before)to find out where to

buy the stuff, descriptions,+ prices. Its so much easier

than trying to guess what they would like + getting a headache from looking in the stores for too long.

Lila 17 months ago

These were great ideas! I'd add two more that are a hit with my 13 year old: netflix subscription (variety of prices based on length of time, etc.), and gift cards for FOOD--mostly anywhere with hamburgers!

Ethan 8 months ago

Okay so I have to say, I am 13 and only about half of this stuff is something that would appeal to me or people I know. Honestly I know very few people who play World of Warcraft (or at least those that admit to it) also, not very many 13 year olds own razor scooters and the ones that do don't use them as they are from when they were little. I was surprised to see nothing about airsoft on this list because 90% of people in my grade who are boys play it. On type of gift card, that I love to get any ways is amazon because I can use it when I want on what ever I want. Finally I would more recommend the sims for girls, never played it myself but I've read reviews on on it. One last thing Call of Duty is also VERY popular.

MrBlobby123 8 months ago

Boys do NOT just want a gift card in general. I am 13 and if I was given a gift card I would be pissed off!!! Parents need to talk to theeir kids, not just give them money to buy their own stuff!

Look I'm a 12 yr old boy yh and I'm goin in2 my 13th Bday an I hav 2 say the video games on ther are absolutely rubbish boys like me are interested in FIFA and call of duty and grand theft auto the 1s u hav put down are lil girly games and believe me only weird parents would allow age limited games I mean almost every1 in my skool has 18 games and so do I. Trust me paintballing is pretty Sikk so get a good paint ball gun or bb guns ther prety popular 2 so yeah all u parents readin my comment take some advice out of it. By the way Sikk means awesome if you parents dunno

alright look.... I'm 13, almost 14, and honestly, xbox is the way to go. I got the xbox360 slim for christmas last year, and i will never look back. Givin your 13 yea old boy a wii game, honestly, is social murder. Most kids nowadays use that "*new-fangled*" system called xbox360. Giving a kid a gift card is ok, but as long as it's to somewhere they like. Don't give a 13 year old a gift card to build a bear, because then you're treating them like they're 4, and they'll look sort of, why don't i say, girly. Get 'em something like an airsoft or paintball gun. just, something to make them look STRAIGHT, which should be a top priority for your 13 year old son. Just, keep in mind that you just got this information from a smart, well-spoken, 13 year old boy.

i am 13 and was looking for things to add to my list this doesnt help much but i think some things you should add are airsoft guns and call of duty games me and my friends always play with our airsoft guns and everyone at my school plays call of duty black ops and modern warfare 2

Some great ideas!! well done. I have three kids, two boys aged 13 and 9 and one girl aged 11. All my kids like to read but I would have to say that the boys have always enjoyed 'information books' things about oceans, animals, human body etc, whether they like to admit it or not children of all ages like to learn new things. Another great gift is experience gift certificates. Cheaper ones include movie tickets, bowling and surf lessons or if you want to spend a little more you could get a ride in a race car, white water rafting, theme park tickets etc. There are big budget tickets like hot air balloon rides, tiger moth or helicopter rides, stretch hummer rides etc but I would save these for special occasions like 18th or 21st gifts. Hope these are helpful.

Well, I'm 14 and if he like video games, that might be the way to go. But if he into sports or activities like running then get him a new leather football. If that don't work, then get him some new shoes, because I love running and I love name brand shoes!

butter-my-bicuit 6 months ago

i am 11 and i would honestly say that you should get ur child a ps3 or an xbox for christmas. an ipod touch is also a good choice. if you get a ps3 you need to buy call of duty black ops or modern warfare 3. and/or maybe a laptop of some choice would be good. shoes are a good choice too but they need to be able to pick them out or you need to have past knowlegde on what type of shoe they like.

Modern Warfare 3

I'm 14 these gifts are good ideas, but if you do not have Internet for a gaming device make sure the game isn't just known for it's online multiplayer.... That happened to me last year, with Call of Duty: Black Ops

I'm 13 and I think that ann Xbox or PS3 is a good idea. I already had an Xbox, so for durin the holidays I got a Kinect instead. A Kinect is a good idea and doesn't require a seperate game to be bought-it comes with Kinect Adventures.

I got a Petrol gokart for myn only £250

I am thirteen and i would prefer Call of duty Modern warfare 3 it just game out a couple of days ago and can be found at places like target for 60 dollars. I also like things like air soft guns. They are basically like Nerf guns but for older kids. The best place to find them are at www.airsoftmegastore.com but you can also find them at sporting goods stores.

awguy 6 months ago

i would prefer an alienware laptop or something game related........and how come crysis or CoD wasnt in the game list?!?!?!

Ok - so the greatest gift for teenage boys and girls and everyone...a Bongo Board (balance board). Put this thing in the middle of your livingroom and your kid will be standing on it (balancing on it) all the time. Challenge your kid to get so good at it that he/she can stand perfectly still while playing a handheld game at the same time! It's great exercise, stress relief and something to keep kids on their feet and focused, which you must agree, is not easy at this age! Another great gift is a ping pong table. Kinda takes up a lot of space, but I prefer a ping pong table over a formal dining table anytime. Guess which one gets used more? Have fun! Unplug!

I'm 13 and tech is my way to go. I love being able to have an iPod touch in my hands, because it's like having a whole new computer, but with a lot more potential apps. Btw, if your child has an iPod touch, or other kind of iTunes applicable device, you should get an itunes card. That is always a safe way to go because it has a certain budget, to keep from accidentally charging your credit card too much, because you can't see how much you spent. However, I do like the ideas on this page. A great guide.

Parker 6 months ago

I am 13. What I really want is a nice pair of running shoes and a new guitar. If you get gift cards, PLEASE don't get it to barnes and noble or blockbuster. I have about 4 blockbusters that I never use. Same goes for toysrus.

SAT prep books for my son. He also enjoys playing the Nintendo We (spelling?) at his friends house but I think computer games are a waste of time. I don't think a young teenager should be playing air soft or violent videos, some of their peers can be such bad influences. Thats why I homeschool my children.

Tofu mom is my 13-yr-old son, and he thinks he is hysterical. I do know how to spell wii, and he has an xbox thank you, but no single- shooter games. I do think they are kind of disturbing. He is not home-school, but I think he just gave me an excellent idea for a gift...SAT prep, you say? Mwaaahaaahaaaa

I think that E games and a select few T games for ps3 or Xbox is great for 12 or 13 year olds. As they grow older and more mature like 14 and 15 is when they should start playing the T or even the M rated games.

good ideals sadly my 13 year old has all the games listed then some, he is not into sports, has his own cell phone and hoards money like no other. He also has his own computer so I am thinking a wireless keyboard and I know he has always wanted his own kitten so guess that is what I will go for. But, thank you making this site it is very helpful.

Kris - good luck! My almost 12-year old hoards money and never cashes in gift cards either. The wireless keyboard sounds like a good idea - or the kitten! We got my now 14-year old an iPad tablet computer for his birthday, but that was a BIG gift. Both sets of grandparents went in on the gift together with us and my son was OK with no birthday party either. Best, Steph

Just saying, no kid wants an Old Navy gift card, or books. And Halo stinks! If you want to buy a good gift get Call of Dudy: Black Ops or Modern Warfare 3 for xbox. Also most kids want some cool basketball shoes like LeBrons.

Ethan 5 months ago

I suggest a apple iPod touch (4th genaration) or sports, gloves, basketballs, baseballs, football ect. I suggest go to academy sports or tod n more for those kinds of things and sports clothes... Video games are also big

Hello in Bend OR! I live in Ky but the rest of my family lives in Bend and Remond! My son will be 13 this weekend. I wantto buy him a phone but not sure if I should add him to my plan with T-Mobile for an outrageous amount or buy him a non-contacted, individual monthly plan...either way Im nervous he will lose it like the last one before I have even had a chance to weigh the final costs. I really need him and I to be in better contact so its important but Im also a tightly budgeted single mom! Any ideas from anyone??/

Hi Clara! Great to hear from someone with local connections!! So, my 14-year old is on my Verizon plan and I am getting my 12-year old a phone for Christmas (shhhh!) too. The phone itself was only 1 cent (awesome for a gift) and adding him to the plan is only $10 per month (both boys are a total of $20 per month with unlimited texting). Curious as to why T-Mobile is charging so much to add him to your plan?? We paid a $25 connection fee and that is it, beyond the $10 each extra per month.

I hear you on the issue with losing the phone. Go with a basic model and have him earn a "better phone" in 2 years with chores and responsibility. My biggest tip, he must leave the ringer on so you can find the phone when its lost. My older son always has the ringer off and then its impossible to find later!!!

I'd love to hear what others say regarding the plan issue. Good luck and Happy Birthday to your 13-year old boy! :-)

that good) but he already has a lot of sport things. I really don't know what to get him. Can you help me pleaaaaaaase he is really fussy and hard to shop for! He really doesn't care what brand of clothes he has but he does like polo and his clothes closet looks like it's gonna burst any second! help before february so i can be ready for him!

stephhicks68 Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi Michele - gosh, that sounds tough! New shoes, perhaps? He's probably outgrowing those that he owns and if he is really picky, you could go shopping together and he can show you what he likes! Or, you could get him a gift of an event or experience to enjoy together. A pro sports game? A music concert? Good luck and happy early birthday to your son!

Our 12yr old grandson just had a bday and we surprised him with his first zip line tour. Last year we took him and a friend to rock climb & the archery range .... fun, fun, fun. He still talks about it.
