Fun Hallelujah Chorus Videos

The holiday season means its time for Christmas music! Whether you enjoy traditional songs or Christmas carols, one of everyone's favorite tunes is the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah. The popular, uplifting song has easy to remember lyrics, drawn from the oratorio written by the baroque composer, Handel in 1741. Despite the Hebrew origins of the word "Hallelujah," (literally, praise Yah, or God), the overall Messiah celebrates Jesus as Christ, and is based on the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer.

Several years ago, my husband and I went to a symphony/professional choir performance of the entire Messiah, not until the end of the second act were we treated to the Hallelujah chorus. At its conclusion, there was not a dry eye in the house, and a standing ovation!

Over time, the Hallelujah Chorus has evolved into a Christmas song, and is often included on Christmas music CDs. Live performances of the chorus usually occur during the holiday season, as well.

There are a number of fun Hallelujah chorus videos that have been created. From flash mobs, to silent monks, and now even school children in Alaska perform the timeless classic. I can't think of a better time of year than to share these festive videos.

The words to Handel's Hallelujah Chorus are brief, but repeated many times during the song:

Hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth, Hallelujah!
The Kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever, Hallelujah!
King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, and he shall reign for ever and ever, Hallelujah!

Kind of boring out of context, don't you think? So let's watch a few fun Hallelujah chorus videos, and listen to the classic song!

This video is my favorite new offering in 2011. A group of school children and residents of Qunhagak, Alaska perform a heartwarming version of the "mute monks" Hallelujah chorus, raising signs that contain each word - or word syllable - in the song to the music.

Its mostly set in the snow, not surprisingly, but yet nobody seems very cold! Adorable children and somber adults in workplaces hold up the signs to the tempo of the Hallelujah chorus. You see them raise the signs from behind fences, under elevated structures, in grocery stores and post offices. It is literally a celebration, praising God from all aspects of life in this small town in Alaska.

This is probably my favorite Hallelujah chorus video. It debuted in 2010 and instantly became a viral video. People in this food court in Niagara, Canada were simply going about their business, eating lunch, talking, and relaxing after some holiday shopping. The next thing they knew, the introduction to Handel's classic song begins and one person stood up to start singing, "Hallelujah!" More and more people join in, and soon it is clear that this impromptu concert was planned!

The music is wonderful; its amazing that these "strangers" have such beautiful voices. But perhaps the best part of the video are the perplexed and amused expressions of the unsuspecting shoppers!

You can find many of these Hallelujah chorus videos on YouTube, with hooded monks silently raising signs to the song. But this 2008 version of high school students is both entertaining and funny.

Watch these actors really get into the performance. Using hands and feet and overly dramatic gestures, its no wonder this video of silent monks performing the Hallelujah chorus is the most popular one on YouTube, with over 9 million hits as of the date of this publication.

As a longtime resident of Seattle, Washington, I really loved this Hallelujah chorus video for several reasons. First, I grew up listening and loving the piano player at Nordstrom. Second, the idea of singing along to classic piano (rather than playing the music myself) was always romantic to me.

While not as impressive as the Niagara flash mob video above, this rendition of the Hallelujah chorus is still festive and entertaining. Listen, watch and enjoy!
