How to Make Turkey Burgers

Turkey Burgers Take Grilling to a Low Fat Level
If you've never tried ground poultry (chicken or turkey), now's the time. Turkey burgers are a delicious, easy way to enjoy low-fat grilling. No need to give up taste just because you are trying to eat healthier. In fact, I'd say that these turkey burgers are even more flavorful than their regular hamburger counterparts!
We made this recipe last weekend for my parents who are die-hard carnivores. My dad confessed that - although he'd heard of turkey burgers - the idea had not impressed him. That was, until he took a bite of our delicious, easy turkey burgers with homemade garlic ailoi mayonnaise!
Even reduced-fat hamburger contains artery-clogging saturated fat. And who wants a burger that's not topped with cheese (more fat!)
When you try these delicious turkey burgers (you can use ground chicken in its place if desired), you'll realize that the unique ingredients shine through, without the need for fatty condiments or even cheese slices. And if you choose one of the new 100-calorie slim profile buns (or no bun at all), you can feel even better about this high protein, low-fat meal.

Healthy Turkey Burger Recipe
Preparing Turkey Burgers
Its easy and relatively quick to make turkey burgers. Simply combine the patty ingredients above in a large bowl with a spoon. Scoop out 1/2 cup of the mixture and form into a ball and then flatten to desired thickness. Set aside on a large platter. You should get 5-6 servings from this recipe.
In a separate bowl, combine the aioli mayonnaise ingredients and whip with a whisk for 30 seconds. Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to dress the burgers.
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If you would rather pan fry or broil your turkey burgers, pre-heat the oven to broil, or warm 1-2 tablespoons of oil oil in a skillet over medium high heat.
Grilling the turkey burgers takes about 4 minutes per side. Watch to make sure that the burgers do not get overcooked. To be safe, use a meat thermometer and make sure that the center temperature is at least 160 degrees before removing.
In the oven, place burgers on a grilling sheet and broil 4-5 minutes, turning once. If you are pan frying your turkey burgers, turn once after 4 minutes and complete cooking for another 3-4 minutes.
If desired, toast the buns while the burgers are cooking. Set out some freshly sliced tomatoes, or perhaps even some grilled onions!
Place the completed turkey burger patties on buns (or rolls, hogies, pita bread, etc.) and top with 1/2 tablespoon of the aioli mayonnaise. Enjoy your healthy grilled meal!

Turkey Burger Variations
We made turkey burgers with rosemary and sun-dried tomatoes - the recipe above - at our home. But there are many variations on the turkey burger theme.
Try replacing the rosemary and sundried tomatoes with basil and pinenuts. Instead of garlic mayonnaise, top with 1 tablespoon of pasta sauce. Delicious!
Greek turkey burgers are a snap with mint standing in for the rosemary and 1/2 cup of crumbled feta cheese instead of the sundried tomatoes. Thinly sliced cucumber is the perfect touch. Serve in pita bread instead of burger buns.
Try mixing in some gorgonzola cheese and thyme in place of rosemary and sundried tomatoes. Any ingredient that will not overpower the more delicate flavor of ground poultry can be incorporated in your own unique recipe!
Sliders are very popular appetizers these days, as well. Make smaller versions of your turkey burgers and use special rolls in place of buns. These tasty treats can be eaten in 2-3 bites. Just the thing to accompany a tall glass of iced tea or even a beer on a hot summer day!

Steph, how funny that you would write a hub about turkey burgers. My youngest daughter was home for a few days, and as she is one for healthy eating we made turkey burgers for dinner last night. They were awesome, even my son who is a red meat and potatoes man through and through loved them. I substitute ground turkey and chicken in many of my recipes that call for ground beef. It's even good as meatloaf.
great hub as usual
hope you and your gang are well
kindest regards Zsuzsy
So glad to see turkey burgers getting their due. I love them and my hubby and I make them often. Looking forward to trying your recipe and the yummy mayo dressing. We sometimes finely chop olives (green and black) with some garlic and mix into the middle of the patty. At our last BBQ we ended up serving more turkey burgers than beef burgers! Nice hub. Thanks.
Great hub Steph-- I like turkeyburgers, I really do, but for me nothing beats an old fashioned big beefburger, organic meat ground at home, just before cooking and grilled to medium rare--pass the ketchup please:-) oh yeah-- that garlic aeoli mayo sounds awesome!!!!
lots of great ingredients I never thought of. great stuff
Hi all - great to see all the burger fans! I have to admit that I would normally pick a ground beef burger, but this turkey burger was soooo tasty that I just had to take my enthusiasm to write a hub. :) Happy grilling!
Yum! Great hub! So great infact that we featured it on Twitter at http://twitter.com/hubpageshottest :D
Great hub! I think I'll run home after work and try that turkey burger recipe.
Thanks for featuring it at the hubpageshottest!
Hi aquaticmoves - I hope you'll agree that turkey burgers are a delicious, healthy addition to your recipe box :)
For a long time I avaoided trying a turkey burger. Finally a friend talked me into it and to my surprize it was delicious. Your recipe and variations sound wonderful. I'll have to try them Thanks.
Isn't that funny? I know so many people that say the same thing - didn't want to try turkey burgers, but once they did, they were hooked!
You know I had just eaten and you made me hungry again--that says something for the recipes and hub. Great job--I want to try that spinach in the burger but I think I'll add feta in there as well--mmmm. =:)
LOL Winsome! Yes, spinach in turkey burgers is especially tasty and healthy. And I love feta cheese too. Bon Appetit!
I eat veggie, boca and turkey burgers; NO RED MEAT! Thanks for sharing these recipes for spicer burgers I will be trying them soon...
Thanks NN for the great comment - I was chatting with a friend today about turkey meatloaf. Sounds like I'll be getting her recipe soon and will definitely share on HubPages :)
Chopping green onions and adding that to the ground turkey is also delish!
Great idea! We'll add some green onions next time. Just off to the store today to pick up some fresh ingredients and more ground turkey - its a summertime staple!
I must confess I have never had turkey burgers before and you have convinced me I must try them? I'm always up for trying new things and am quite sure I will love them! It is such a well thought out hub with the presentation...much more than a recipe. Thanks for this!
We are really enjoying cooking meals with ground turkey these days. We made turkey meatballs for spaghetti the other night. Maybe another hub... :)
I'd love to try some of these ideas. I am a recent convert of ground turkey. I've been using it in place of beef in spaghetti, tacos, and other things. Not only is it better for you, it's cheaper, too!
Definitely better and cheaper (and tastier too in my opinion!) We've been making turkey meatballs too - yummy in spaghetti and meatball sandwiches. Cheers, Steph
Sounds great. I have some ground turkey in my freezer right now. I couldn't decide between burgers or balls. I think I'll go with the burgers and try this recipe. I won't be making my own mayo though, tried that in the past with disastrous results. Love this hub.
Hope you love the turkey burgers! They are really great - I hear you on the mayo. Its good with, but also really tasty with just a bit of butter on the toasted bun. I'm already thinking lunch! :)
I used the recipe but made balls. They were very yummy :)
sounds great! I will have to do that next time!
Oh it's so yummy! I want to try this! thanks for the recipe..
Turkey burgers are so healthy and delicious! Cheers!
Your recipe was delicious! My whole family loved it! I broiled them for about 5 minutes then served with the aioli, tomatoes, and fresh spinach on a bun! Yum! Thank you!
Yay!! That is great to hear earthisgreat! So glad your family liked the turkey burger recipe. Best, Steph
stephhicks68, Thank you for highlighting turkey burgers, which I infinitely prefer to beef burgers. I remember unintentionally converting a dyed-in-the-wool, red-meat-is-the-only-meat friend to turkey burgers a decade ago; it was so gratifying! Gorgonzola is an interesting touch. I also like Havarti because its mild, buttery taste blends so well with turkey burgers.
Hi stessily,
Havarti would be excellent with turkey burgers. Ground poultry is better than ground beef for a number of reasons - people just need to adjust to the milder taste. We use it in meatballs, meatloaf and much more. Cheers, Steph

Great hub! To be honest I try to avoid burgers, but when I want a burger, I prefer beef! At home we eat bison meat almost exclusively instead of beef. It is a good compromise and much better for you than beef! My mother-in-law gets it in Colorado and we stock up our deep freeze every couple of years.
